The District Court of New South Wales is the intermediate court in the state's judicial hierarchy. It is the largest trial court in Australia and has an appellate jurisdiction. It hears serious criminal offences, appeals from lower courts and civil proceedings. 

In its criminal jurisdiction, the District Court can deal with all criminal offences except murder, treason and piracy.

In its civil jurisdiction the District Court can deal with motor accident cases, irrespective of the amount claimed, and other claims up to $1,250,000.

The Compensation Court Repeal Act 2002, transferred certain disputes to the District Court in what is commonly referred to as its residual jurisdiction.

The Court also has a summary jurisdiction to determine prosecutions commenced under the Work, Health and Safety Act 2011.
